Most Grenadians are descendants of Africans, brought over to work on sugar plantations between the 16th and 19th centuries. Intermarriage between this group and the small numbers of Europeans and indigenous Indians has meant that there is little racial tension. As in other Caribbean states, extended families with absentee fathers are common.
